Econometric Game 2004

The Econometric Game is a two-day event in which teams of students from several European universities will solve an econometric case made by independent professors. In the next years, VSAE aims to develop the Econometric Game into an European Championship for excellent students in Econometrics.

The Econometric Game 2004 took place on 7 and 8 October at the faculty of Economics and Econometrics of the University of Amsterdam and the Dutch Central Bank. Louis van Gaal – the world famous football manager, who in 1995 had won the Champions League with Ajax – opened the Game. In the opening speech he pleaded for a new competition set-up in the Netherlands with two divisions instead of the ‘Eredivisie’, so that clubs would play more often against clubs of the same strength.

The assignment for the teams was to research the impact of dismissing a football manager. The participants were supplied with data concerning the Dutch ‘Eredivisie’. Professor Koning – who is a specialist in sports econometrics at the University of Groningen – was the case maker.

During the first day the participants attended readings of several companies which occupy themselves with econometrics. Afterwards followed a visit to Heineken Experience, a drink in the O'Donnels Irish pub and a diner in restaurant La Storia Della Vita.

On Friday the teams fought for the victory in the Dutch Central Bank. There were five teams from the Netherlands, three from Belgium, one from Budapest and one from Copenhagen. In more than four hours time they had to carry out econometric analyses and they had to write a report about this. Afterwards they presented their results to the jury and the other participants. On friday evening in restaurant l'Opéra the winner was announced by the head of the jury, professor Magnus. The prestigious Econometric Game trophy was conquered by the team of the University of Copenhagen.
