Objective / Purpose of the Department
The Customer & Market Intelligence Department is part of the worldwide head office of TNT Express.

In support of the TNT strategic intent, the objective of the CMI department is to deliver timely and relevant customer, competitor and market intelligence and strategic insight that feeds into the strategic planning process and enables business decisions to improve sales effectiveness, customer service and competitive advantage. The CMI team focuses on the 4 main areas of Customer Intelligence, Market Intelligence, Competitor Intelligence and Strategic Insight.
The role of the Market Intelligence team within CMI is to provide regular and ad-hoc quantitative and qualitative market intelligence to the CMI department, Head Office Functional Areas and worldwide Business Units (internal customers). For this purpose, Market Intelligence is defined as actionable and customised data and information relating to macro-economies and business environments, vertical markets, international trade flows and specific express transportation related topics. The main methodologies used for data and information collection are primary research through divisional market research projects and secondary research through TNT internal sources, external information in the public domain and with the support of external suppliers. A wide range of analysis techniques is applied to derive insights. Generated information and insights are actively communicated within the company.

Objective / Purpose of the Internship
In this role, you are co-responsible for the development of the international Express Market Growth Model. The main objective of the model is to have forecasting and life-cycle management capabilities which will help TNT to derive quantitative market developments, forecasts and TNT’s position within. The model will be based on external and internal market data, for instance (but not limited to) macro-economic, express market and TNT commercial data in various countries.

Key Activities / Accountabilities of Intern
Investigate most appropriate methodology/ies for the model
-> Investigate the methodology/ies that will best support the design of the model (e.g. correlation/regression)

Perform data analysis
-> Apply selected methodology/ies to perform analysis with (available) internal- and external datasets in one or multiple dimensions (e.g. in time, by country and/or combination thereof)

Develop forecasting and life-cycle management capabilities
-> Investigate the approach to use the data analysis results for:

  • The production of reliable forecasts for the express market and TNT’s position, within in various countries
  • Understanding of how the life-cycle of express markets in countries and TNT’s position within can be quantified and compared in various countries
  • Explore potential other data applications

Design and test the Express Market Growth Model
-> Develop a structural approach with the support of a software tool (to be decided which one), to:

  • Easily upload internal and external datasets
  • Automatically convert the datasets into reliable forecasts and life- cycles for various countries
  • Test the tool and outcomes and correct if and where required.

Document the functionalities and capabilities of the Express Market Growth Model

Essential Educational and / or Training Qualifications & Certificates
-> Studying at University level in Econometrics/Applied Economic Statistics

Preferred Experience and Knowledge
-> Practical experience / expertise in modelling in a business context is preferable
-> Experience in using SPSS/SAS is preferable
-> Good communication skills
-> Fluent use of written and spoken English
-> Experience in studying and/or working in an international environment is preferable

Necessary Technical / Functional Skills
-> Advanced correlation, forecasting and modelling skills (for example: regression/correlation methods, moving average, time series methods, trend extrapolation and ARIMA)
-> Strong analytical and investigative skills
-> Accuracy/attention to detail
-> PC Competent: MS Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Intranet and Internet. Lotus Notes preferable
